Alfred-Almond, Naples move on to season championship

The final All Star matches of the regular season took place this evening around Steuben County.

In Corning, undefeated Corning Gold faced Haverling which had only one loss on the season.  In a tightly contested match to take the Large School Division, Corning Gold came out on top with a 35 to 32 score.  Congratulations to Bonnie Grinnell on her winning season coaching the Corning Gold champions.

Corning Gold will face Naples, the winner of the Medium Large School Division, next week in Arkport at the All Star Championships.  Naples had a strong, undefeated season under the leadership of coach Jon Betrus.

In the Small School Division this evening, Canaseraga edged out Bradford with a tight 15-14 win.  Avoca clinched the division with a very strong, undefeated season under the fine coaching of Hilarie Sutherland.  Tonight’s match was won by Avoca due to Prattsburgh’s conflicts with sports resulting in a forfeit.

The expected tight match between Hammondsport and Alfred-Almond for the winner of the Medium Small School Division did not disappoint.  Hammondsport defeated Alfred-Almond in their match giving each team a five and one record on the season.  A 25 question tie-breaker was then proffered by Moderator Pat Soper-Oakes and resulted in a 7-1 win for Alfred-Almond.  Congratulations to coach Steve Donlon whose team will now meet Avoca next Monday in Arkport for the Championships.

To see the ‘best of the best’ All Star teams compete for their championships, come to Arkport on Monday, April 17th, at 6:15 pm.   Hope to see you there!
