It’s not every day you see a triple play. Or an unassisted triple play. But Alfred-Almond third baseman Nolan Tormey did just that on Friday when he pulled off a rare unassisted triple play. As A-P’s bats were heating up and loading the bases, Tormey fielded a ground ball, tagged the runner going from third to home, tagged third to force the runner coming from second, and as confusion ensued, got the runner who was going to second and third.
The smoke cleared after five innings and Avoca-Prattsburgh came away with a 23-1 win.
A-P sophomore catcher Blake McConnell went 4-for-4 with a double, 4 RBI’s and two runs while Sawyer Devoe blasted a home run deep over the left-center fence and had three RBI’s in the win.
On the mound, Haden Abbott Haden Abbott improved to 4-0, striking out three and allowing a hit. Connor Hammond struck out five in relief and did not allow a hit. was 2-for-3 with four runs and four stolen bases for A-P (6-1).
Abbott also had two hits and stole four bases.
Also for A-P, Dylan Campbell, Jamie Reagan, James Forte and Collin Hammond had RBI singles, Jamel Crowder (two runs) Macoy Putnam (three runs) and Josiah Stilson (2 RBI’s) had hits while Jack Tilley had a run and J.J. Crowder and Devin Wakefield each had 2 RBI’s and a run. Dan Stilson at first base had several big catches and plays.
For A-A, Liam Ruthven had a RBI single to drive in Hunter Smith.
