April 29th is WORLD TAI CHI and QIGONG DAY 2023 in Hornell NY

It is truly a global event. It begins on the island of Samoa, moving westward like a wave across each time zone

Like a global flash mob, people around the world (80 + nations) join together in meditative movement starting at 10 am local time.  Our intention is to raise awareness of the profound potential for improving health and quality of life. Interestingly, it has been proven, scientifically, that during this celebration the world becomes more peaceful.  As the day progresses, we pick up the baton 14 hours later, in Hornell NY, infuse it with our special chi, and send it on west.

This year, our event will be located at the Hornell YMCA. It will be outdoors in the grassy yard adjacent to the Y, or in the gym if it is deemed too wet on the lawn. Plenty of parking in the lot across the street.

All are invited to join this event.  It is free and open to the public.  It is not necessary to know tai chi. You can follow along with the slow flowing movements or just watch. It is sponsored by the Tai Chi Society of Western NY, and the Confucius Institute at Alfred University. We practice regularly in Alfred M-W 9:30 – 10:30 in the Alfred Village Hall (2nd floor), Th and Fr at the Alfred UniversityJoyce-Walton Wellness Ctr.  We are outside on the village green during summer months. Our membership is growing and a large contingent comes from Wellsville, NY where classes are held at the YMCA with instructor, Theresa Brown  T & TH– 9:30 – 10:30 At the Hornell YMCA Terry Butler teaches tai chi  T& TH  9:00 – 10:00

We are thrilled to be reunited with our highly esteemed teacher, Master Guifang Liu, arriving from China 2 days before in order to join this event.  Her bio can be found on our facebook page Tai Chi Society of Western New York. Email questions to
