Undefeated season for Dansville JV’s: The future is bright for Mustangs baseball

DANSVILLE – Following their recent doubleheader sweep over Hornell, the Dansville JV Mustangs’ baseball squad just wrapped up a perfect season.

Dansville defeated a determined Hornell squad in both games May 18 at Maple City Park to finish 14-0.

Dansville won by tight-knit scores of 9-6 and 7-6 over the JV Red Raiders.

Dansville rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the night cap.

With the score eventually tied at 4-4 in the third, Hornell’s Brody Flaitz singled, driving in both Shaemus Khork and Braydon Fouser to put the Red Raiders back up by a 6-4 lead.

In the bottom of the third, Dansville’s Quinn Dixon grounded out but drove in Brady Henchen to take the score to 6-5. In the top of the fourth inning, southpaw Jacob Kreiley and the stout Mustang defense did its job and held the Raiders to no runs. In the bottom of the fourth, Kreiley singled on a line drive to shallow center field driving in Carson Mays to tie the game up at 6-6. Brady Henchen then hit a sacrifice fly to center field bringing in Nolan DeZarn to give Dansville the 7-6 lead.

Kreiley would record the final two outs to preserve the undefeated season.

Impressively, Dansville, who finished 14-0, outscored their opponents by a 174-70 margin as the Mustangs’ offense scored double digit runs in nine of the 14 games.

As a team, Dansville batted a hefty .398 at the plate while swiping 151 bases and driving in 135 runs.

Leading the way for Dansville was Carson Mays, who hit a whopping .618 on the season followed by Nolan DeZarn and Ty Schirmer who batted .538 and .513 respectively.

The pitching staff was just as impressive as they racked up 158 strikeouts while allowing just 58 walks and a team ERA of 4.33.

The ace of the JV staff wasNolan DeZarn who pitched 201/3 innings allowing 13 hits, 10 runs and struck out 46 batters. DeZarn finished with an ERA of 3.09.

Jacob Kreiley was also tough on the bump as he pitched 14 innings, mainly as a reliever, as he only allowed six hits and three runs striking out 10 batters.

Brady Henchen also had a solid season as he pitched 10 2/3 innings, allowing only four hits and one run. He struck out 23 batters and was exceptional down the stretch. 

Defensively the JV Mustangs were a solid group across the board, keeping their errors to a minimum.

The undefeated Dansville Mustangs JV team is coached by Shawn Harnish and Alex Wampole.

Members of this year’s squad included Brody Sick, Trea Nickerson, Brady Henchen, Dawsyn Mistretta, Jacob Kreiley, Quinn Dixon, Aiden VanAuken, Hunter Beaupre, Nolan DeZarn, Landon Wadsworth, Brycen Lemmon, Logan Kendall, Ty Schirmer, Mark Sick, and Carson Mays.

The future looks very bright on the diamond in Dansville.
