For the second straight night, Hornell put together a solid all-around team effort and defeated the Genesee Rapids 5-3.
Bobby Bartlett (North Park) gave the Steamers the lead in the 2nd with a RBI single to plate DJ Stoianovich (Finger Lakes CC) who doubled to lead of the inning.
The Rapids took the lead for the first time with a pair of runs in the 3rd but Stoianovich delivered a RBI double in the bottom of the inning to tie it back up.
Genesee plated a run in the 5th but would not score the rest of the way. In the bottom of the 5th, Noah Brooks (Siena) singled and scored on a wild pitch to tie it and Bartlett followed with a RBI triple to deep right field to give Hornell a lead they would never give up.
In the 7th, Ryan Hill (Mercyhurst) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and two outs to add an insurance run.
Matt Wessels (Iona) earned the win by pitching five solid innings. He allowed three hits, three walks, and three earned runs while striking out four. Tre Slawson (Keuka) was outstanding the rest of the way. He pitched the final four innings without allowing a run. He let up three hits, didn’t walk a batter, and struck out four.
Stoianovich was 3 for 5 with a RBI while Brooks and Justin Swanson (North Park) were each 3 for 5. Bartlett finished 2 for 4 with a pair of RBI.
Shay Allis was 2 for 5 to lead Genesee.
Hornell heads to Dansville for the final time of the regular season on Saturday. The Steamers and Gliders start at 5 p.m.
