ALFRED – Ray Chambers, a Texas-born photographer and respected voice in the world of in-plant printing management, passed away at his home on August 13, 2023. Born in Houston on January 29, 1943, his legacy is one of wisdom, warmth, and an irreplaceable Southern charm. By his side throughout, was Catherine Chambers, his heart’s companion, who shared in his endeavors and accomplishments for 28 years.

Awards punctuate Chambers’ legacy, including his 2013 induction into the ACUP Hall of Fame and recognition as IPMA’s Contributor of the Year in 2018. A sought-after thought leader and engaging presenter, he frequently spoke at conferences for the Association of College and University Printers (ACUP+) and the In-Plant Printing and Mailing Association (IPMA), where he offered insights drawn from decades of overseeing operations at notable institutions like the State of Texas, the University of Louisville, Iowa State University, and Juniata College.

A lifelong learner, Ray pursued a doctoral path in higher education administration at Penn State and partnered with his wife Catherine, a fellow in-plant manager, to establish the impactful Chambers Management Group.

When he wasn’t consulting, Ray’s camera was his favorite means of storytelling. Whether suspended from a helicopter in pursuit of the perfect shot or documenting Willie Nelson’s home, his photography was more than mere images; it was a narrative, a story of his life told through frames.

A fighter to the end, Ray faced the challenges of Lewy Body Dementia and Parkinson’s disease with grace. Ray is survived by his wife Catherine, daughters Kelly Chambers and Christina Pellas, son Ray Chambers Jr (known fondly as RJ), sister Gail Boudreaux, and a multitude of Boudreaux nephews and nieces. His goodness and his memory live on in the hearts of those who knew him.

There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held on September 16, 2023, at 1:00 pm at the Union University Church in Alfred, New York. The family is being assisted by Bud Baker of Baker-Swan Funeral Home of Andover.

Online condolences may be offered at www.baker-swan.com. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to remember Ray may consider a memorial contribution to “The Memorial Fund” at the Union University Church, 5 Church Street, Alfred, NY 14802. © 2023 Baker-Swan Funeral Home.
