September 2023 Newsletter from Steuben County Sheriff James Allard

It’s a beautiful day in Steuben County. We are looking at a beautiful Labor Day weekend, a great time to spend with family and friends. We hope that everyone celebrates responsibly, plan for ride sharing and avoid riding with distracted or impaired drivers. As teachers and students prepare to return to school, please remember to give yourself extra time on your daily commute and be alert for stopped school buses, pedestrians, bicyclists, crosswalks and school speed zones.

At the Sheriff’s Office, your public servants were busy again. Your Sheriff’s Office provided security coverage, a car seat event, bike helmets, STOP DWI presentation, K9 presentation and Navigational Patrol events at the Steuben County Fair. Our Bicycle Patrol provided special security for all events. Sergeant Shutt and Deputy G. Harrison attended Hybrid/Electric Vehicle Operations training and Deputy Nybeck attended the NYS DCJS Problem Oriented Policing Course. Sergeant Fanzo performed assessor duties for the Albany County Sheriff’s Office Court Security re-accreditation. SRO Kimmey attended the NYS Juvenile Officers Training. Our Correction Officers continue to provide excellent service, with hospital and constant watch details burdening an already overburdened staff. Sheriff Allard presented at the Lamoka-Waneta Lakes Association annual meeting and hosted the seventh annual Law Enforcement Memorial Park Golf Tournament at the Bath Country Club, which raises money for the Steuben County Law Enforcement Memorial Park. We had a record nine NYS Sheriffs attend this year!

August was another busy and challenging month in the Sheriff’s Office. Our investigators and deputies were tasked with four death investigations, five assault investigations, two strangulation investigations, four burglary investigations, one stalking investigation, two possession of a weapon investigations, one reckless endangerment investigation, one fire investigation, four welfare fraud investigations, ten larceny investigations, six grand larceny investigations, one hindering prosecution investigation, nine harassment investigations, ten criminal mischief investigations, two endangering a child investigations, one animal abuse investigation, two menacing investigations, and one possession of stolen property investigation. Our Patrol Division was tasked with multiple domestic incident investigations along with mental health detainments, emergency medical aid, assisting other agencies, serving of warrants, and four intoxicated or impaired driving arrests.

All of our deputies and officers performed in an outstanding fashion.

We continue to pray for the families and victims of mass casualty events and all Ukrainians suffering under Russian aggression.

Thank you for supporting the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office in these challenging times and stay safe!

Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard
