LCAA’S FINEST

LE ROY – Seventh-year head coach Matt Weinman and the Le Roy boys basketball program came up just one game short of the Class B2 title last year, falling to Wellsville by a 52-43 count at Blue Cross.

Weinman and the Knights would love nothing more than to get another shot at the top prize.

And with the LCAA’s top post player, 6-foot-6 senior forward Merritt Holly Jr. back for his final season, the Knights’ chances look promising.

Holly was a focal point on most opposing teams a year ago, yet still managed to put up monster numbers averaging a double-double of 24 points and 10 rebounds per game.

His soft touch around the hoop and excellent court vision to pass to open teammates are two of his biggest strengths. He’s also an excellent post-defender.

“Merritt Holly Jr. is one of the best players in Section V and he knows he can count on his teammates to help our team battle each night,” coach Weinman said.

Le Roy’s sectional football title got the Knights a late start for the winter season, but they will be fine says Weinman.

“Last year we were playing our best basketball at the end of the season which helped us to be playing at the Blue Cross Arena,” Weinman said. “Continuous growth is what we will need again.”

Helping Holly this season will be fellow classmate Cal Koukides (Forward), along with juniors Jean Agosto (Forward), Jake Higgins (G/F), Aaric Luce (Guard) and Zander Staba (Guard).

There are some talented newcomers that Weinman is excited about including senior guard Tommy Condidorio, who missed all of last season with an injury.

Other newcomers include juniors Adam Woodworth (Guard), Alex Spezzano (Guard), and Jace Jedrewski (Forward) along with sophomore Matthew Hockey (Guard).

“The players are working hard and we should have some good depth this year,” coach Weinman said. “We have both good size and solid guard play. Our LCAA D-II will be extremely competitive and a grind with no nights off. The LCAA is a tremendous league with a plethora of quality teams.”
Le Roy opens their season Dec. 6 at Cal-Mum.

Some exciting games to watch this season include at Avon (Dec. 20), at York (Jan. 18), home vs. Avon (Jan. 26) and at home against York (Feb. 9).
