Mayor: “We are very excited for the summer season to begin!”

From the City of Hornell

The City of Hornell and the Hornell YMCA are excited to announce the planned opening of the pool at Veterans Memorial Park at James Street on July 1st. The Common Council approved the partnership between the City of Hornell and the YMCA for the fourth consecutive year in March.

Mayor John Buckley commented on the agreement, “Contracting with the YMCA has been a great success. It’s community-friendly and enjoyable for all. The YMCA is accepting sponsorships for ‘Free Swim’ days, which have been extremely popular. All Fridays for the season are booked, with more days being added as sponsorships come in.” The Mayor also expressed excitement about the park’s recent upgrades, saying, “With the improvements to the pool house and locker rooms, as well as the addition of the splash pad, we are very excited for this summer season to begin!”

Hornell YMCA Branch Director Natalie Donahue states, “We are thrilled to continue our partnership with the City of Hornell for the management of the pool at Veterans Memorial Park. Over the past few seasons, we have enjoyed great success and remain committed to ensuring the pool remains accessible and enjoyable for all community members. We look forward to another fantastic season working with the City, and are grateful for the tremendous support we have received from the community, especially in sponsoring our ‘Free Swim Days’. This support has allowed us to offer multiple free admission days, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the pool.” The cost for sponsoring a “Free Swim Day” is $100, and interested parties can contact the YMCA for more information.

The pool schedule will remain the same as in previous years, with swim hours between 12:30pm to 6:30pm. Admission is an affordable $1 for City residents, and $2 for non-City residents.

The City of Hornell is set to open the playground summer program beginning June 24.  The program will run for eight weeks, with hours from 9:00am-12:00pm and 1:00pm-4:00pm at five playgrounds: Maple City Park, Veterans Memorial Park at James Street, Stephens Avenue, the Columbian School, and returning this year, the Bryant Apartments.

With upgrades to the tennis, pickleball, and basketball courts anticipated to be completed in the coming weeks, summer of 2024 is expected to be an exceptional one at Veterans Memorial Park and throughout the City of Hornell!
