Classes start Monday August 26 for over 3500 students

From Alfred State College,

In his opening address, Alfred State College President Dr. Steve Mauro shared college updates and highlighted the success of the previous school year.

Mauro’s remarks focused on the progress the college has made on the strategic plan: attracting new students, strengthening academic and student success, and cultivating a caring community.

“I am happy to share the story of how all the time and efforts made by our faculty and staff in the last year have paid off to keep Alfred State in a good position,” stated Mauro. “This is an exciting time, and I look forward to building on this momentum.”

ASC is on track to again surpass 3,500 students enrolled when classes begin on Monday, Aug. 26. Alfred State also broke all records for student applications in the past year by first setting a new record of 10,000 applications in March and then surpassing 11,000 applications in June. These strong results are attributed to students and parents appreciating Alfred State’s message of building career skills.

Mauro highlighted numerous efforts to support the academic success of ASC students. Students are benefiting from academic buildings, dining operations, and recreation facilities that are open for more hours. Other initiatives include more mentorship programs, an increase in the number of tutors, and a focus on extensive support for under-represented and at-risk groups of students.

Campus wellness programs, increased investments in employee orientation and onboarding, and a refreshed employee recognition program were part of Mauro’s focus on cultivating a caring community.

In introducing the revamped employee recognition program, Mauro highlighted the outstanding work done by the college’s Student Records and Financial Services department. The department was the first team to be recognized in the refreshed Cheer for a Peer program for their efforts in managing the challenges with the launch of the new FAFSA program.

Mauro took the time to applaud the full reaccreditation of the college by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE), the fundraising efforts of the Institutional Advancement office, and the construction progress around campus.

Mauro also welcomed new employees, gave updates on the budget, and encouraged faculty and staff to show their Pioneer pride daily. He encouraged the audience to continue the splendid work done on campus.
