Becoming a Church for the World Through Art and Community

“Resonance and Reflection” opens this Saturday September 28 in Alfred at the Union University Church

By The Rev. Roberto Che Espinoza, PhD

In our rapidly changing world, churches are reimagining how they connect with their communities. At Union University Church, we are embracing a new way of being present in Alfred by inviting creativity and collaboration into our sanctuary. This fall, we are thrilled to open our doors to graduate students from Alfred University’s MFA program for an art installation that will transform our sacred space into a celebration of abstract expression.

For many of us, art offers a unique path to deeper reflection and connection. Like faith, art speaks to the human condition, often in ways that words cannot. It opens windows into our souls, offering glimpses of joy, sorrow, hope, and transcendence. By welcoming the creative works of Alfred University students, we are taking a step toward becoming not just a church for worship but a church for the world—a community gathering space where art and faith meet.

Our hope is that this exhibition, titled Resonance and Reflection, will encourage conversations across different walks of life. Whether you are a long-time resident, a student, or someone simply passing through, this installation invites you to pause, to breathe, and to experience the transformative power of art in a place that has long served as a beacon of hope and welcome.

In doing so, we are reminded of the profound call to break down barriers and build bridges. Art is a vehicle for such transformation, allowing us to see beyond the walls of the church and into the hearts of our community. By hosting events like this, we aspire to create a space where all are welcomed, where creativity flourishes, and where we can continue to live out our mission of love, justice, and hospitality.

We invite you to join us as we explore this beautiful intersection of faith, art, and community. Opening is Saturday, Sept 28, 6 to 9 pm. Exhibition hours thereafter are Sundays, 1 to 4 pm on September 29, October 6 and 13. The church is located at 5 Church Street in Alfred, NY.

The artists featured in this show include Kameo Chambers, a second year MFA student in Integrated Arts from Philadelphia, Pa;  Louise Sanders, a first year MFA student in Sculpture from Oakland, CA; Ignacio Luera, a first year MFA student in Painting from Austin, TX; and Max Heaton,, a first year MFA student in Painting.

Together, we can continue to build a church that engages the world—one where beauty, diversity, and expression are embraced, and where all are invited to be a part of something greater.
