Picco leads to a strong win: Hornell – 66, Haverling – 40
From Hornell High School Athletics,
The Hornell Red Raiders traveled to Alfred University Tuesday afternoon where they took on #7 seed Haverling Rams on the college court.
Hornell led 36 – 18 at the half, but the Rams came out strong in the 3rd quarter, outscoring the Red Raiders 16 – 10. Hornell answered with 20 points in the 4th quarter, 12 points coming from senior, PJ Picco.
“Tonight we played pretty well,” said Hornell coach Kirk Scholes. “Our 3rd quarter was rough, but I thought the other three quarters we kept them to single digits and attacked.
“PJ was great tonight finishing with 27. He lived in the paint and was aggressive looking for his shot. He also was active in the passing lane getting deflections and steals.
“Wyatt [Evingham] I think may have played his best game of the year. He was composed and did a good job finding teammates. He also had 16 points, including 4 3s. I just thought he played really well. He had a really good practice yesterday. When he keeps it simple he can by truly dynamic,” continued Scholes.
Also scoring for the Raiders was Aaron McInerney (8), Demayne Dixon (6), Austyn Gollnitz (4), Marco Picco (3), and Nick Gray (2).
Austin Durand netted 10 points for the Rams followed by Lawrence Duncan with 8 points.
Hornell improves to 7-3 on the season.
“We have a monster test on the road Friday night,” Scholes commented. “Our mental toughness, physical toughness, and poise in a tough environment will be tested. I expect a great turnout from the Hornell and Wellsville communities. I think the boys will rise up and be ready to play.”
The Red Raiders travel to Wellsville to take on the Lions in the Dan Barkley Showcase with an 8pm start.
