The old cliche about total team effort is more than talking points with the Hornell Red Raiders. Once again, the girls’ basketball team pulled off an impressive win with nine players scoring and a 10th pulling down rebounds.
Hornell downed Haverling High of Bath, 77-43 on Wednesday night to improve to 10-1 on the season.
Early in the contest, Hornell junior Jordyn Dyring scored her 1,000th career point and finished with a game-high 25 points. But she also filled up the stat sheet helping her teammates with three assists, four rebounds and three steals. She accomplished this milestone just 11 games into her junior season.
Her team-first play is not lost on the team or coaching staff.
“Jordyn is a great kid who works hard and plays the game the right way. She is very unselfish and never hesitates to make the right play, she’s always willing to dive on the floor for lose balls even when she’s exhausted, and she works extremely hard on defense as well often covering the opponents leading scorer,” Hornell coach Jim Dagon said. “She’s a joy to coach and she is a top notch role model for the girls in our youth program to look up to. I’m very proud of Jo for this achievement- she earns everything, the wins, the accolades, the awards, etc. that come her way. “
At 10-1, Hornell is knocking at the door for the No. 1 seed in Section V Class B. Currently, Young Women, a school, is the No 1 seed at 8-1 with 4.556 points and Hornell has 4.555 points.
Also in the chase is #3 Waterloo at 8-3 and #4 Wellsville at 10-2.
Hornell takes on Wellsville in Wellsville on Friday night during the opening of the annual Barkley Showcase. The Hornell and Wellsville boys is the second game of the night.
The Red Raiders will then get a break before playing York on Jan. 28 in York.
The scoring continued against Bath as Payton Bentley had a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds and one block while Raegan Evingham also had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds, three steals and two assists.
Selena Maldonado had 10 points, 4 rebounds, 5 steals and 3 assists , A’jonay Hawkins had 5 points and 6 rebounds, Mia Nasca 4 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals and an assist, Alexis Smith 2 points 3 rebounds and a steal while Mayleigh Martin had 2 points and 2 rebounds, Teegan Eveland added 1 point, 1 steal and 1 rebound and Zahra Mehr pulled down 3 rebounds .

“It was a total team effort tonight to get the win, everyone contributed throughout the game,” Dagon said. “This was our first back to back of the season and the non-starters really stepped up bigtime for us to help us get the win.
“A’jonay Hawkins was dominant inside on both ends of the floor, Teegan Eveland, Alexis Smith and Zahra Mehr all gave us valuable minutes throughout the game handling guard duties, and Mayleigh Martin scored the first points of her varsity career!” Dagon added.
