Republican Assemblyman calls for increased cooperation with ICE

From the office of Assemblyman Palmesano,

Assemblyman Phil Palmesano (R,C-Corning) joined Executive Associate Director for Enforcement and Removal Operations Tom Homan, Assembly Republican Leader Will Barclay (R,C-Pulaski), Senate Republican Leader Rob Ortt (R,C-North Tonawanda) and his Republican colleagues from both the Assembly and Senate at a press conference to call for the passage of “Laken’s Law.” This proposal is named after Laken Riley, a Georgia nursing student who was killed by an illegal migrant who had previously been arrested in Queens but was allowed to be released onto the streets due to New York’s sanctuary status.

“The simple fact of the matter is this tragedy was completely avoidable. If local law enforcement was allowed to cooperate with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), then this vicious killer would never have had a chance to carry out this horrific murder. Laken would still be alive today, and unfortunately, she is not the only one,” said Palmesano.

Palmesano and his colleagues are also calling for the repeal of the Green Light Law, which prevents ICE from accessing the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) database for information on those in the country illegally.

“While Gov. Hochul and Albany Democrats will tell you the Green Light Law is simply about making sure everyone driving on the streets has a license, that is simply not true. If that were true, they wouldn’t have also included a provision that bars ICE from obtaining data from the DMV. This is just another misplaced policy pushed by New York Democrats to protect illegal immigrants at the expense of public safety, and it must be repealed,” concluded Palmesano.
