Martin J. “Marty” Madden, 76, passed away on Wednesday (April 16, 2025) at Bath VA Medical Center following a lengthy illness.
Mr. Madden was born on October 2, 1948 in Wellsville to M. Joseph and Eileen M. (Paisley) Madden. He was a 1966 graduate of Wellsville Central School and later served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War from 1968-1969. On September 4, 1976 he married Kathy Lynn Trowbridge, who predeceased him on November 13, 2020.
Marty worked in maintenance for Alfred University in Alfred for most of his working career.
Marty is survived by two sisters-in-law, Sharon Olter of Amity and Barbara Acocello of Friendship; a brother-in-law, Scott (Dawn) Trowbridge of Wellsville; three special nieces, Lesli Acocello, Carrie Carpenter and Ashley Olter as well as longtime friends, Tim and Tammy Schram, Fred Kelley, John Plummer, Dave Fagan, Frannie Slocum, Mike Wonderling, Sr. and Tory Rounds; several nephews and racing friends.
In addition to his wife of 44 years and his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Joetta A. Whitley; his mother and father-in-law, Harold “Bruce” Trowbridge, Sr. and Theresa L. Trowbridge; a brother-in-law, Harold “Bruce” Trowbridge, Jr. and a close friend, Basil Shutt.
Marty loved animals, especially dogs and cats. His home became an animal shelter for many pets that needed a home for various reasons. He also enjoyed the outdoor life where hunting and fishing was a favorite pastime.
Marty was a racing enthusiast nicknamed “Mad Dog”. His car numbers throughout the years were 7, 17M and 44. Some of his favorite tracks were McKean County Raceway in Smethport, Pa, Drum Raceway in Allentown and Freedom Motorsports Park in Delevan. Marty also enjoyed motorcycles and working on his racecar.
Marty is described by those who knew him best as good hearted, a jokester and “one in a million”. He would do anything for anybody. He enjoyed playing cards, especially poker, and he hated to lose.
Per Marty’s wishes there will be no prior visitation. A graveside memorial services will be held on Thursday (April 24) at 11:00 a.m. at Bath National Cemetery in Bath with full military honors. His ashes along with his wife’s ashes will be laid to rest in a combined interment ceremony.
