Board of Public Safety Approves Officer Derek McCumiskey’s Appointment as Patrolman

The Board of Public Safety has unanimously approved the appointment of Officer Derek McCumiskey to patrolman for the Hornell Police Department in their June meeting. McCumiskey, who was provisionally appointed in August 2023, has successfully completed the Police Academy, field training, and the Civil Service examination. His appointment is effective immediately.

Chief Ted Murray praised McCumiskey’s progress, stating, “Derek has demonstrated a strong work ethic and a dedication to serving our community. He has shown great promise throughout his training, and we are confident he will continue to be a valuable member of the department.”

Mayor John Buckley also expressed his support, adding, “Derek’s commitment to law enforcement and to the City of Hornell is commendable. It’s always encouraging to see local individuals step up to serve their hometown. We appreciate his dedication and look forward to his continued service.”

McCumiskey, a 2020 graduate of Hornell High School, has deep ties to the community and now officially assumes his role as a patrolman with the department.
