Since opening in April 2022, Liggett Dog Training, LLC has been helping dog owners across the Southern Tier build stronger, more harmonious relationships with their pets. Located in Cuba, NY, and led by Alex Liggett, the business focuses on personalized, compassionate training methods that address each dog’s unique needs.
Whether you’re welcoming a playful puppy into your home or trying to overcome complex behavioral challenges with an adult dog, Liggett Dog Training offers comprehensive services to ensure success every step of the way.
At Liggett Dog Training, the team provides a variety of services designed to meet the needs of both dogs and their owners:
- Puppy Training: Establishes the foundation for good behavior, helping puppies learn essential obedience and socialization skills, while addressing common issues such as biting and jumping.
- Obedience Training: Helps dogs of all ages master commands like sit, stay, come, and heel. These sessions also focus on developing effective communication and leadership skills for owners.
- Behavior Modification: Custom training programs designed to tackle more complex issues such as anxiety, fear, reactivity, and aggression.
- Group Classes: Once private training is completed, these group sessions provide an opportunity for dogs to practice their skills in real-world scenarios with other dogs.
A key feature of Liggett Dog Training is personalized service. Every new client begins with a free 20-minute consultation, during which Alex works directly with the owner to develop a tailored plan for their dog’s needs. This consultation helps ensure that each training experience is as effective as possible.
Alex’s love for animals started early, growing up surrounded by dogs and learning to show and train quarter horses. Her journey led her to a career in veterinary medicine, where she spent five years working in private practice and shelter medicine. During this time, she honed her understanding of small animal care and behavior.
However, it was her experience with Razz, her adopted pitbull mix, that truly ignited her passion for canine behavior. As a young puppy, Razz was friendly and social, but by adulthood, she developed severe dog-reactivity. Determined to help Razz, Alex chose to train her dog herself rather than send her to a board-and-train facility. After months of hard work and dedication, Alex was able to resolve Razz’s behavioral issues, which led to the founding of Liggett Dog Training, LLC.
What began as a pet-sitting side business in 2020 quickly evolved into a full-time venture. “Clients started asking if I could train their dogs while I was pet-sitting, and it just snowballed from there,” Alex recalls.
When Alex isn’t working with dogs, you can find her enjoying outdoor adventures like kayaking, camping, or horseback riding. This love for nature and exploration informs her training style, which not only addresses behavioral challenges but also emphasizes overall well-being. Her approach to training focuses on building a deeper bond between dogs and their owners, ensuring that every dog thrives both physically and emotionally.
