ALFRED NY: Excitement high as Traffic Light Trophy is up for grabs for first time

Pioneers v. Saxons on Saturday November 8, kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.

A busy week of athletic competition in Alfred will be highlighted by the first Alfred Cup football game between Alfred State and Alfred University. The Pioneers and Saxons will battle for the Traffic Light Trophy on Saturday (Nov. 8) at 1 p.m. at Pioneer Stadium.

Alfred State will enter the game with a 4-4 (2-3 Empire 8) record while Alfred University is 3-5 (1-4 Empire 8). This is the first regular season meeting between the two institutions.

Noah Currier has led the way for ASC. He has 1,017 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns (6.5 per rush and 127.13 per game). He also leads the team with 34 receptions for 305 yards and three scores. Elijah Georges has 31 catches for 311 yards and four scores while Justin Horvath has passed for 1,068 yards and ten touchdowns.

Tommy Nyquist has rushed for 628 yards and three touchdowns this season to lead the Saxons. Chris Kelly is completing 54.59% of his passes and has ten touchdown passes and 1,160 yards. Carmine Hoag accounted for seven of those touchdowns and has a team high of 392 receiving yards.

Defensively, Chris Bergman leads Alfred State with 65 tackles (47 solo). Conner McWilliams has four sacks to lead the team to go along with 27 tackles while Donnell Hall has five of the team’s 15 interceptions.

TJ Marsh leads AU with 71 tackles (41 solo) while Thomas Welch leads the team with 4.5 sacks and two interceptions to go along with his 68 tackles.

Alfred State is averaging 30 points per game while giving up 28.88 while AU is averaging 21.13 points per game and giving up 36.63.

Tickets for the game are $10, with a portion of each ticket sold will be donated to support the Alfred-Almond Community Sports Association. Students, faculty, and staff of both Alfred State and Alfred University will be admitted free.

A VIP Experience is available through the ACES Main Office (607-587-4064). Each ticket ($30) includes one ticket, two beverages (beer, wine, or seltzer) in the End Zone Party (tented area with seating), charcuterie board grazing table, local cider and donuts, and hot coffee. Tickets are limited to the first 75 people.

Both Alfred State and Alfred University will have swag to purchase and representatives from the alumni offices will be there to greet alumni and friends.

Power & Construction Group, Inc. and ServU Credit Union are the sponsors of the Alfred Cup. Currently Alfred State leads the Alfred Cup standings 6-4 following victories in men’s soccer, men’s cross country, and women’s cross country. AU has earned points with wins in women’s soccer and volleyball.

The football game is just one of many big athletic events this week.

  • Both the men’s and women’s soccer teams will play in the AMCC semifinals (the men travel to La Roche while the women travel to Pitt Greensburg for 2 p.m. games) on Wednesday (11/5) looking to qualify for the AMCC Championships on Saturday (11/8).
  • Basketball season begins on Friday (11/7) with a tripleheader in the Orvis Activities Center. The women’s team battles Penn College at 4 p.m. before the Crossbar Alfred Classic starts at 6 p.m. with Alfred University taking on Lycoming followed by Alfred State taking on Hiram. The tournament continues Saturday at AU with the possibility of an Alfred Cup contest (3 and 5 p.m.)
