From Hornell Athletics,
Ben Woolever hit a last second layup off a 3/4 court out-of-bounds pass from Tyrone Buchanan to pull off the 47-45 win over the Pavilion Golden Gophers Wednesday night in Pavilion.
The Red Raiders struggled to hit shots in the first quarter and found themselves down 24-18 going into halftime.
Coming out strong in the second half, the Raiders slowly began chipping away at the Pavilion lead. The Golden Gophers led 31-28 to start the last quarter of play, and the game was neck-and-neck until the final seconds.
Pavilion led 43-42 with one minute to go in the game. Marco Picco hit a jumper to put the Red Raiders up by one with 0:37 on the clock. On the defensive end, Cody Cardamone came up with a big steal under the Pavilion basket. Getting fouled in the process, he hit his second free throw to add one point to the Hornell lead.
Up 45-43 with 2.3 seconds left in the game, Hornell was called for a foul trying to intercept a long Pavilion pass. Pavilion’s Keean Cummins hit both free throws to tie the game. After a quick time out from coach Scholes, Tyrone Buchanan inbounded a long ball past half court to Ben Woolever, who took a dribble to the basket and hit the layup at the buzzer for the win.
The Red Raiders were led by Ben Woolever, who scored15 points and added 7 rebounds & 3 assists in the win. Demayne Dixon followed with 12 points and 3 assists. Marco Picco added 11 points, and Tyrone Buchanan had 5 Points, 7 rebounds, & 3 steals.
Pavilion’s Keean Cummins lead all scorers with 21 points while Joe Meehan followed with 14 points for the Golden Gophers.
The win was a good lesson for the Red Raider team. Coach Kirk Scholes reflected, “We are constantly learning that varsity basketball is a grind. We are learning how physical these games are. Pavilion is a physical defensive team. They played really well defensively. They challenged us. I love how we stayed the course and stayed together. Execution was huge down the stretch, and the kids made just one more play than Pavilion.”
Scholes drew up the final inbound play for freshman Tyrone Buchanan to look for sophomore Ben Woolever just beyond half court. Buchanan hit his target, and Woolever drove in for the layup and win. Scholes continued, “The last play was awesome! Tyrone making the 3/4 court pass. Ben with an unbelievable catch and then the awareness to know he had 2 seconds and not to rush. Just an unbelievable finish by two kids that work really hard.
“I hope these tight games and touch four quarter battles will help us late in the year. I’m proud of how this group has fought and continued to work. We know we need to continue to learn and get better.”
The Red Raiders will have almost a full week of practice days before hosting the Dansville Mustangs next Tuesday at Alfred University.
