GALLERY: Eagles, sapsuckers, woodpeckers, and cardinals prepare for the storm

From Janie Ferguson, Cameron Mills NY

It is currently 15″ with a feels like of -3 here in Cameron Mills, NY this morning at 9:30 am. The expected high for today is 18* and the low is -2*.

What a fun-filled week of bird watching we’ve had! I begin today with a lovely female cardinal, and a grand bald eagle that our granddaughter Elizabeth spotted flying upstream earlier in the week. I had the joy of having a new feathered friend, enjoying my suet this week! It is a female yellow-bellied sapsucker. At first I thought it was a mud-soaked hairy woodpecker. Upon further research I identified her correctly. My grandson Winston asked, on the way home from school today, “Does the yellow bellied sapsucker suck sap?” After looking up their diet we found out that they primarily feed on tree sap from the bark of trees. (Appropriately named.) They create small holes, or sap wells, to access the sap.

Next I have an elegant male cardinal, and another shot of the majestic bald eagle overlooking the Canisteo River.

I’m ending today with a colorful red-bellied woodpecker and a pair of eagles that we enjoyed seeing together as they looked for their next meal in the river below.

The weather report is calling for an arctic cold moving in today with a possibility of ten to fifteen inches of snow moving in early Sunday morning through Monday.

I hope you have a good weekend. Stay safe, and warm, Janie
