Lady Chargers fall to Keshequa in Section V Class C Regionals

The Section V champions from Canisteo-Greenwood ended a great season with a loss to Keshequa, 57-38 in the state qualifiers on Monday night. Keshequa is 23-1 on the season and will now face Frewsburg from Section VI on Saturday at FLCC at 7:45 p.m. 

The Chargers won the first basketball title since Canisteo and Greenwood merged in 2004 with an incredible  66-61 win over Bloomfield in the Class B2 championship game on Saturday. 

While the team fell last night, the accomplishments of the 22-3 team, led by coach Collin Button will go down in history. 

During the championship game win over Bloomfield, Canisteo-Greenwood (ranked No. 2 in Class B for New York State) took an insurmountable 20-4 lead. However, the Chargers stormed back to tie the game and win in overtime.

In the title game, Payton Bentley had a game-high 22 points and earned Section V Class B2 MVP honors. Joining her on the all-tournament team were teammates Gracen Mahany (16 points) and Kara Mahany (14) , Bloomfield’s Calla McCombs and Sadie Kachmaryk, Letchworth’s Sasha Bellamy and JaNiyah Bell of Lyons.

Bailey Mullen has been solid all season and continued that in the sectional final win with 12 points while MacKenna Mullen drained a clutch 3-pointer.

In the loss Monday, Canisteo-Greenwood played tough with the outstanding Keshequa team but Alicia Wood scored 16 points while Braelyn Isaman had 14 and Ryley Benner 10 for the Wildcats to help them pull away and win.

Bentley had a game-high 18 points while Bailey Mullen scored 10 points and Gracen Mahany and Kara Mahany each scored five.
