Rose-breasted Grosbeaks at the feeder in Cameron Mills NY
Photo journal from Janie Ferguson,
It is a very foggy morning, mostly sunny, and 38* here in the hamlet of Cameron Mills, NY this morning at just about 8:30 am.
I begin this week with the spring rose-breasted grosbeak. The first one I spotted was Wednesday, April 29th, and it was the colorful male. Two males were battling for the sunflower seeds, too. Then Thursday in the late afternoon came the female, too.
I posted a video on Wednesday of my first sighting, and asked others on my Cameron Mills, NY, Town of Rathbone, Steuben County FB page if they had seen any yet, and if so where did they see them?
Gwen from Jasper said she had Baltimore orioles, and hummingbirds, too. Paula in Canisteo said she had a female a week ago, and the male today. Charlene from Monterey, NY said the Baltimore oriole showed up here on 4/25/2026. The female rose-breasted grosbeak showed up on 4/28/26, and the male on 4/29/26. Sandy from Hartsville said she also saw a Baltimore oriole, too. Dawn from Cameron Mills said she saw one at her bird feeder yesterday. Randy from Butler County; western PA saw two at his feeder. He added they are not shy at all. Liz Thomas said we had 6 males, and hadn’t seen a female yet in Chemung County. Also Tina from Hammondsport, and Sandy from Fort Wayne Indiana, saw them, too. Then they were seen in Englewood Fl, East Corning, & Nunda, too. There were more who gave a report, too, but I won’t list them all here. You can see those in the comments under my grosbeaks, if you so desire: https://www.facebook.com/CameronMillsTownofRathboneSteubenCounty
Then an entertaining cardinal pair enjoying sunflower seeds, a striking red belly woodpecker, and a sweet, little black-capped chickadee.

The delights of spring are all around us now that the long winter has ended. It’s like a whole new world opens up for us to enjoy as we get outside more, enjoy the fresh blooms of the trees, and beautiful flowers, and listen to the songs of the birds all around, too. I’m still waiting this Friday morning to see the Baltimore orioles and the hummingbirds, too, that others in our area have already seen.

I hope you enjoy these beauties, as I do, and get to see your own, as well. Have you seen any grosbeaks, Baltimore orioles or hummingbirds yet? If so, where are you?
Have a good weekend, Janie
