HORNELL, N.Y. – Longtime Hornell resident Bernard “Bernie” McAneney was honored with a Key to the City by Mayor John J. Buckley during the 2026 Hornell Irish Festival.
The 94-year-old local leader was recognized for a lifetime of public service, civic leadership, and dedication to preserving Irish culture across the region. Born in Philadelphia in 1932 to Irish immigrants, McAneney moved to Hornell in 1973 and quickly became an integral member of the community. Mayor Buckley praised McAneney during the ceremony as someone who truly embodies the pride, heritage, and spirit of Hornell.
Key highlights of McAneney’s public service and community contributions include:
- City Government Leadership: Served eight years as Fifth Ward Alderman and 16 years as Hornell City Clerk.
- Veterans & Fraternal Service: Served as Commander of the Hornell American Legion and remains an active member of the Knights of Columbus, Hornell Elks Lodge, Moose Lodge, AMVETS, and local Catholic parishes.
- Youth Sports: Dedicated years to local youth as a coach for both Little League baseball and football.
- Irish Cultural Revival: Credited with revitalizing Irish heritage in Hornell, helping establish the local Ancient Order of Hibernians in 2006, and serving as Grand Marshal of the Hornell St. Patrick’s Day Parade in 2018.
