It’s a beautiful day in Steuben County. After a random freeze, we are in what feels like summer weather. First cuttings of hay are in full swing, the jail garden is planted and the beauty of Steuben County is even more evident. Unfortunately, in the midst of enjoying one of our most treasured natural resources in May, a young man lost his life in Keuka Lake. A family celebration of Mother’s Day on the lake ended in tragedy. We pray for the family to heal and at the same time feel blessed for the assistance we received from our neighboring law enforcement and fire partners enabling the recovery of the young man. Thank you to the Livingston, Monroe and Yates County Sheriff’s Offices, the New York State Police and the Hammondsport, Pulteney and Wayne Fire Departments for making the recovery possible.
Sadly, in May we lost a member of our Office. Court Security Officer Don Horton passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. Don was a Wayne Fire Commissioner, retired NYS DOCCS Sergeant and spent his last two years as part of our team. He was a true public servant, invested in his community.
In May, the Sheriff’s Office held the ninth annual Law Enforcement Memorial Service. This somber event reminds us all of the sacrifices made every day by your public servants and their families. We were honored to have several distinguished guests and singers from the Bath Haverling and Campbell Savona School Districts. Thank you as always to the Veteran’s groups that support our mission.
At the Sheriff’s Office, your public servants were busy again. Deputy Butler was honored by the NYS STOPDWI/MADD award group for his achievement in DWI enforcement. Deputy Shepherd attended the Hybrid/Electric Vehicle Operations Course, receiving training in hybrid and electrical vehicle safety, Investigator Payne attended the Child Forensic Interview training to better assist the Child Advocacy Center, Sergeant Day and SRO Brass attended the Post Critical Incident Seminar to provide better peer counseling after an event. Deputy Martin attended a Behavioral Analysis Interview Course. Deputy Dininny, Deputy Heller and Deputy Butler attended the Marine Law Enforcement Course and the Marine Patrol Vessel Operator Course, with Deputy Dininny serving as an instructor at both. Sergeant Day, Sergeant Hawk and Deputy Nybeck instructed at the Southern Tier Law Enforcement Academy and Sheriff Allard instructed at the SUNY Alfred Police Academy. Lieutenant Logsdon was honored to attend the North Hornell Volunteer Fire Department banquet and Sheriff Allard was honored to attend the Hammondsport and Forest View Gang Mills Fire banquets.
May was another busy and challenging month in the Sheriff’s Office. Our investigators and deputies were tasked with three death investigations, nine assault investigations, two strangulation or choking investigations, five burglary investigations, two attempted escape investigations, three bad check investigations, one drowning investigation, two leaving the scene of a crash investigations, one robbery investigation, four fire investigations, two welfare fraud investigations, eleven larceny investigations, three grand larceny investigations, two drug investigations, one harassment investigation, six criminal mischief investigations, six criminal contempt investigations, two animal abuse investigations, two sex offense investigations, two endangering a child investigations, one menacing investigation and one jail contraband investigation. Our Patrol Division was tasked with multiple domestic incident investigations along with mental health detainments and assisting other agencies, including two intoxicated or impaired driving arrests.
All of our deputies and officers performed in an outstanding fashion and we received five commendations from community members detailing the excellence of service they received.
We continue to pray for the families and victims of mass casualty events and all Ukrainians suffering under Russian aggression.
