High-flying Lions dunk Bath in Section V playoffs, Way-Co next; Hornell has Mynderse

The Section V boys’ basketball ‘tournament continued Wednesday night and in Wellsville, a large and loud crowd witnessed a victory by the high-flying Lions.

An early dunk by Wellsville senior Trenton Green gave Wellsville a 9-8 lead and the Lions cruised to a 78-43 victory.

Wellsville, the No. 6 seed in Class B1 at 9-12 will now take on #3 Wayland-Cohocton on Saturday at 7 p.m. in Wayland.

The Lions went on a 16-1 run as well with Blake Kalkhoff scoring a game-high 22 points. Green had 14, Cole Densmore 13, and Nick Germain-Tardieu 10.

The inside play of Derek Coleman was a factor as the senior scored six while Cole White had six assists and five points,  Payson Root, Jack Davis and Ben Helveston each scored two.

For Bath, Connor Binkowski scored 12 points and Owen Burlingame kept the Rams alive early with his sharp-shooting and 11 points. Miles McCormick had seven while Colton Coots and Bentley Decker had four and Asher Phenes and Xzavier Ruest each scored two.

The No. 1 seed in the bracket is LeRoy, and they will play No. 9 Livonia who beat No. 8 Midlakes, 54-39 behind 17 points from Jack Henry.

Meanwhile, the No. 2 seed Hornell is looking for a win over No. 7 Mynderse on Saturday to face Wellsville or Way-Co in the semi’s.

Mynderse crushed No. 10 Dansville, 54-19 on Wednesday night.
