The bicycle is a key part of the American childhood. The freedom, the fun, and the exercise of having a good bike should be every kids reality, says Larry Pelkey of Hornell. He’s been putting that belief into practice since 2022, taking in old bikes, making them new again, and giving them to a kid ready to ride. Hornell celebrity USPS icon and photographer Steve Harrison introduced Pelkey and his efforts in this must read, “Pedaling if Forward” piece.

Each year “The Bikeman,” a he’s affectionately known, seem to give more away, get more support, and get more enjoyment from the service. With partnerships like Rochester Community Bikes and the United Way of the Southern Tier keep giving and has even added a free new bike helmet to the deal.

Larry was thrilled with the support:

“United Way of the Southern Tier donated 2750.00  So putting this donation with recent funds I was able to purchase 550 brand new kids helmets! We are hoping to start bike giveaways in March 2026 and the countdown to 2000 bikes starts!! So far we have given away 1618 bikes, only 382 to go!!!”

Last year Larry gave away bikes at Kiwannis Easter Egg hunt, Hornell Middle School carnival, Fresh Start Church, VFW and Moose. Also Cozy Cats and Kittens Rescue, Hornell Humane Society, Garcia’s back to school back pack and haircut event, the United Presbyterian Church, and also Catholic Charities.

When Larry talks about “we,” he’d talking about another joyful part of experience: His crew, his team, his grandkids!!!

“Arrow, Dagger and Jonah work on bikes and help at giveaways! Piper works on her own bike and helps out at bike giveaways and Mylah help out at events. My oldest granddaughter Jewel helps when she can and now we have a great-grandkid! He’s just learning how to ride a balance bike but Averly is already trying to help out in the bike shop!!!
