BATH, N.Y. – Steuben County marked Independence Day with a patriotic commemoration held at the Charters of Freedom Monument in Pulteney Square, bringing together residents and local officials to honor the founding principles.
The ceremony began with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by welcoming remarks from Steuben County Historian Griffin Bates, who reflected on the significance of preserving and sharing the nation’s history.
Steuben County Manager Jack Wheeler delivered a reading of the Declaration of Independence, while Steuben County Legislature Chair Kelly Fitzpatrick read the Preamble to the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights, reminding those in attendance of the enduring principles of liberty, individual rights, and self-government that continue to define the nation.

“Celebrating our nation’s birthday by reading the documents that laid its foundation was both an honor and a privilege. It serves as a powerful reminder of the extraordinary courage, wisdom, and foresight of our Founding Fathers,” noted Kelly Fitzpatrick Chair of the Steuben County Legislature
County Manager Jack Wheeler said “Independence Day is a special time for all Americans, and it’s even more unique with the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. We’re proud to spend a few moments in Pulteney Park at the Charters of Freedom, honoring the ingenuity and bravery of our founders and forebearers”.
The annual observance serves as a reminder of the importance of civic engagement, historical preservation, and honoring the ideals upon which the United States was founded.
