A great weekend for Dansville athletics: basketball wins, indoor track highlights, wrestling goes 4-1 (photos and story)

GREIGSVILLE  – Six-foot junior forward Aynsley Belcher scored 18 points and pulled down 13 rebounds as visiting Dansville (3-1) ran away with the 46-33 victory over Geneseo in LCAA crossover action Friday.

Junior Kayli Meyer added 13 points and four rebounds while classmate Chelsie Tyler netted seven points with four boards. Another junior, Emma Allen, pulled down eight rebounds for the Lady Mustangs.

Geneseo (2-1) was led by Mary Claire Rollins and Emily Lamb with 12 and 10 points respectively.

DANSVILLE BOYS SECOND AT ROTARY

Ethan Bennett’s jumper from the elbow with just three seconds left gave the Blue Devils the Dansville Rotary Basketball Tournament title Saturday night in Dansville.

The senior Bennett finished with 14 points.

Geneseo led 29-27 at the half before a 19-16 third period run gave the Mustangs the one-point lead heading into the fourth.

Dansville had the lead by one with 17 seconds to play when the Mustangs missed a crucial 1-and-1 giving Geneseo the ball back setting up Bennett’s heroics.

Ryan Whitney led the Blue Devils with 16 points.

Dansville (3-1) was led by Collin Gray’s 21 points and seven rebounds while Dawson Wadsworth added 12 points and three steals.

Reid Martin collected eight points and seven boards while Nate Gardner netted eight points.

Gray and Wadsworth earned All-Tournament honors for Dansville.

MUSTANGS INDOOR TRACK ROUNDUP

Dansville’s indoor track and field team had their first meet this past Friday night at Houghton College and a successful night it was.

Highlights from the boys team placing first in the 1600 m Jeffrey Birmingham. 

Logan Kendall came in 5th in the 55 m hurdles and 3rd in the 1000 m. 

Patrik Puffer came in second in the 55 and fourth in the long jump with a jump of 19’6 1/2” putting him on the Dansville top five all-time leaderboard. 

Alex Schuster had a successful first season first meet placing first and shot put and first and weight throw for our class. His throw of 41’4” in the weight throw ranks him second on the Dansville all-time leaderboard. 

Ben Briggs placed sixth in the weight throw. 

The boys 4×200 relay (P. Puffer, C. Beman, R. Burley & C. Rechichi) and 4×800 relay(J. Birmingham, J. Guizzotti,  L. Kendall & D. Hanks) both placed third. 

The girls team highlights included Maggie Bacon with a first in the 1500 (5:37.45) and second and the 1000.

Also, placing in 1500 was Sofia Rodriguez and Riley Nagle, who were second and third respectively.

Joyce Rodriguez-Santiago placed second in the 55 hurdles. 

In the 300 placing first Haley Beman in a timer 44.53 and fifth Amelia Hurlburt. 

Finishing first in both the 600 (1:55.62) and 1000 (3:21.94) was standout Brianne  Hurlburt. 

Also placing in the 1000 was Maggie Bacon and Bailey Hayes who were second and fifth respectively.

Haley Beman finished second in the 55 meters while the girls 4 x 200 relay (H. Beman J. Santiago, A. Hurlburt & E. Birmingham). Finishing 1st the 4×800 m  relay of Brianne Hurlburt, Riley Nagle, Baylee Hayes & Maggie Bacon.

In the weight throw -1st Maddie Hurlburt with a throw of 26’2” & 4th Kaitlyn Lee. The Mustangs compete again this Friday at Houghton. 

“We have a very strong returning group and the new additions this year will make it an even better season,” head coach Eileen McMaster said.

DANSVILLE WRESTLERS GO 4-1 AT ARKPORT DUALS

The Mustangs placed 4-1 Saturday as they lost only to Hornell by a 48-28 score in the first match of the day.

They went on to defeat Bath-Haverling (42-36), Odessa-Montour/Watkins Glen (60-18), Alfred-Almond (58-15) and Avon-Geneseo (39-36).

“I’m super proud of how well this young team is doing, especially how much they are growing,” said head coach Justin Walker. “My coaches and I are pouring ourselves into this program day in and day out to make sure these young athletes gain speed for the near future, but it takes time and patience in this sport. You can’t learn this amazing sport over night. We are so so proud of all of our wrestlers and their commitment on and off the mat especially helping in the community.”

Having and outstanding tournament was Wyatt Sartori- (5-0), Jackson Zangerle (3-0), Kaiden Ellis (4-1), Elijah Bender (4-1), Brandon Foster (2-0), Miles Harrington (3-2), Peter Thompson (3-2), Grayson Cartwright (3-2), Kailubb Austin (3-2), and Aaron Mehlenbacher (1-0).
