Wild car chase in Corning ends after drug-impaired driver crashes into apartment complex

On April 6, 2023, the New York State Police at Painted Post arrested Albert J. Jones, age 33 of Watkins Glen, NY.

It is alleged that Jones had been operating a 1998 Dodge Ram pickup truck that was previously reported stolen by the Watkins Glen Village Police Department. Troopers located the vehicle travelling on State Route 414 in the Corning area and attempted to conduct a traffic stop when Jones refused to comply.  State Police, assisted by the City of Corning Police Department, initiated a pursuit of Jones that traversed to the area of Lamphear Court, where Jones lost control of his vehicle and crashed into an apartment building. Jones exited the vehicle, fled on foot, and subsequently apprehended.

Jones was charged with Reckless Endangerment 1st (class D Felony), Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 3rd (class E Felony), Aggravated Unlicensed Operation 1st (class E Felony), Unlawful Fleeing of a Police Officer (class A Misdemeanor), Resisting Arrest (class A Misdemeanor), Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs (unclassified Misdemeanor), and numerous Vehicle and Traffic Law violations.

Jones was transported to Guthrie Corning Hospital where he was treated and released with minor injuries. He was lodged at the Steuben County Jail to be held for Centralized Arraignment Part Court.  Jones is facing additional charges by New York State Parole for violating the terms and conditions of his parole. 

The State Police were assisted by the City of Corning Police Department, Steuben County Sheriff’s Office, Village of Watkins Glenn Police Department, and the Schuyler County Sherriff’s Office.
