Opinion from Town of Alfred Supervisor Daniel Acton

Allegany County recently declared a State of Emergency due to the action of New York City to divert migrants to other counties in New York State to unsustainable levels. It is stated that Allegany County does not have the resources to provide for the needs of even a small influx of migrants.

This declaration is misguided for at least two reasons. First, it is public policy that does not show compassion for those who are in need. Second, we consider our country to be religiously observant. The declaration is inconsistent with the teachings that say “.. I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was hungry and you gave me meat, I was a stranger and you took me in..”
