Chuck Nagel of Newfane awarded in Buffalo region

The Buffalo Bills and ADPRO Sports are proud to announce this week’s high school coaches of the week for both the Buffalo and Rochester regions.
These two coaches were selected for their impact on their players on and off the field and will receive $1,000 for their football programs. Both the Buffalo and Rochester region’s Coach of the Year will be named during the Week 17 game against the New England Patriots.
Buffalo Region Coach of the Week #2
Chuck Nagel of Newfane High School is the Coach of the Week for the Buffalo region. On Friday, Newfane won Friday’s home conference game against Barker/Royalton-Hartland High School by a score of 43-11 to go 2-0 on the season. The win marked the first time Newfane started a season 2-0 since 2003.
Nagel led Newfane to a Division title in 2019, seven years after beginning his tenure as head varsity coach in 2012. He also led the Panthers to the Section 6 playoffs in 2017. He has been with Newfane since the 2003-04 school year.
Nagel is a frequent volunteer at the Newfane Community Weekend and could be seen in the dunk tank at an event raising money for the Newfane Alumni Association this past summer. He was also a huge advocate for leading Newfane’s drive to install lights and new turf on the football field and athletic complex, which has led to increased attendance at Friday night games.
Nagel said that he adapts his coaching style each year as the players and personnel in the program change.
One of Nagel’s favorite memories is in progress, as he is enjoying coaching his son, CJ, who is a senior on the team.
Rochester Region Coach of the Week #2
Ismail “Izzy” Mehr is the Coach of the Week for the Rochester region after he coached the Hornell Red Raiders to a win over Penn Yan Academy on Saturday. The Red Raiders are now off to a 2-0 start after coming back in the second half to take home the win.
Mehr gave credit to his coaching staff for the adjustments they made at the half, which he called “critical” in their comeback wins on Saturday and the week before.
Mehr’s approach to coaching involves inspiring his players to believe in each other for the betterment of the team, which he saw manifest in the team’s ability to rise up to the challenge of a halftime deficit and earning the victory.
“I’m humbled and honored, and as mentioned this was not possible without an amazing staff of assistant coaches,” Mehr said.
Mehr has been on staff at Hornell since 2002, but this season marks his debut as the head coach. Mehr is a physician and has served on several local boards and is nationally recognized as a medical humanitarian having volunteered on medical missions throughout the world.
His favorite football memory was when longtime Hornell head coach Gene Mastin won his first state championship.
