A game that looked like it might go to overtime with a 0-0 score turned into a late victory for Canisteo-Greenwood football and their first-ever Section V championship.

The York-Pavilion team emerged as the team to beat in a crazy, wide-open class once the injury bug hit defending champion OAE.

But Canisteo-Greenwood got better each week from Week 1 to the title game and pulled off the victory, 6-0.

Senior quarterback Collin Cox, who was named the offensive MVP of the game, hit sophomore wide receiver Carson Chaffee for a huge gain with just over a minute left in the game.

C-G senior Beau Zeh then ran in the winning touchdown with 55 seconds left and a 6-0 lead.

Senior Lucas Mason’s interception with seconds left sealed it. Cox took a knee twice and the celebration started.

York-Pavilion beat C-G, 13-12 earlier in the season in another thriller. The two teams met on Oct. 27, 2018 in the semi-finals in Cal-Mum. Canisteo-Greenwood had the lead, 7-6 and a late Y-P touchdown gave them a 12-7 victory.

It’s been a banner season for Canisteo-Greenwood coach Steve Donlan, who was a Buffalo Bills’ coach of the week and won three state championships at Hornell as an assistant. However, this his is first title as a head coach and first in school history.

C-G will take on the Section VI Class D champion in states next week.
