The Hornell Red Raiders will head into the Christmas break with a seven-game win streak and the #1 seed in Class B1 after their impressive 75-51 win over the Dansville Mustangs in league play at home Wednesday night.

The Mustangs held pace with the Raiders through the first quarter, but by halftime, the Raiders found themselves with a solid 14 -point lead, ahead 32-18 before the break.  The Red Raiders added to their lead with a solid performance at the free throw line in the third quarter, shooting 12 for 15 for a 52-35 lead before heading into the last 8 minutes of play.

Gennaro Picco led all scorers with 31 points in the win.  “I thought Gennaro was awesome all night,” commented Kirk Scoles.  “He led us in a bunch of statistical categories.  He’s doing more and more besides scoring, which is just going to make him and the team better.”  Picco also had a game high 7 assists and 3 steals and led his team with 9 rebounds on the night.

“We had a bunch of guys play really well,” said Scholes. “Marco Picco was assertive offensively.”  Marco added 9 points, 2 steals and an assist.  “I thought PJ had a good game.  He got to the line a bunch.  We have been asking him to be more aggressive at the rim.”  PJ Picco netted 16 points and grabbed 7 rebounds and 2 steals on the night.

“Defensively,” continued Scholes, “I thought our 1-3-1 bothered Dansville early.  Xzaiver did a great job in the middle clogging up the gaps.  We are also starting to see more production from the bench in the last few games, and we need that to continue.”

Dansville’s Zaidan VanDurme-Blackmon netted a team high 17 points, while teammates Reese Dixon and Nate Gardner contributed 14 points and 11 points respectively.  Ivan Wolf-Mialky led his team with 9 rebounds.

Reflecting on the season so far, Coach Scholes added, “We are happy to be 7-0 going into the break, but we know some really good teams are coming down the road.  We have to continue to get better at practice and understand that the winter season is a marathon.”  The Red Raiders have a week of practice before they travel to Avon to take on the #1 seed in Class B2 next Friday night.
