Steamers roll past the Horseheads Hitmen

The Hornell Steamers scored runs in each of the first eight innings in their 10-4 victory at Horseheads on Saturday night. The Steamers are now 4-4 on the year.

Hornell loaded the bases in the 1st and Elijah Nichols (Arkansas State) delivered a RBI single to give the Steamers the early lead.

Devin Mersmann (Alfred State) hit a solo homer in the 2nd to double the lead while Finn Ellis (U of Charleston) delivered a RBI groundout in the 3rd. 

AJ Brotz hit a two run homer in the 3rd and Anthony Franco followed two batters later with a solo homer to tie it up for Horseheads (3-6). 

Markus Brehm (Finger Lakes CC) scored on a throwing error in the 4th and Nichols hit a RBI double to give Hornell back the lead, 5-3.

Mersmann singled and came around to scored on a pair of errors by the HItmen in the 5th while Nichols made it 7-3 with a solor homer to cetner in the 6th. Braden McLin  (Louisiana Christian) hit a RBI double in the 7th and Markus Brehm (Finger Lakes CC) followed with a RBI single.

McLin capped Hornell’s scoring with a RBI single in the 8th to make it 10-3. Horseheads scored on a wild pitch in the 9th to cut the lead to 10-4 but never could get any closer.

Nichols was 4 for 6 with 3 RBI while McLin was 4 for 6 with 2 RBI. Mersmann was 3 for 4 and Brehm was 2 for 3 with a RBI.

Mason McClurg (Finger Lakes CC) allowed just the three runs in the 3rd to earn the win. He pitched seven innings, allowed nine hits and four walks while striking out one. Danik Reed (Nunez CC) struck out four in the final two innings.
