Syracuse, NY – In a vibrant blend of artistry and education, Ben Ellis, a classical guitarist, community arts organizer, and dedicated educator, is making waves in the music scene. Known for his innovative programming, Ellis delves into the lesser-known realms of guitar repertoire, creating unique recitals that connect works from the 18th to the 21st century.

Ellis’s approach to music is anything but traditional. He artfully pairs contrasting pieces to unveil unexpected connections, such as his recent performance that included transcriptions of violin works by Eugéne Ysaÿe and J.S. Bach alongside the beloved “When You Wish Upon a Star” arranged by Chet Atkins, culminating with an homage to Walt Disney by contemporary composer Darragh O’Neill.

His talent has graced various prestigious venues, including the Skaneateles Library Concert Series, the Classical Guitar Society of Upstate NY, and the Tenri Cultural Center in New York City. Recently, he captivated audiences at The Principle Art Gallery in Charleston, SC, presenting arrangements of rock and roll classics, complementing an exhibit showcasing behind-the-scenes photos of legendary rock musicians.

Ellis is committed to expanding the reach of classical guitar music. He curates special events that marry music with art, wine, dance, and historical themes, fostering community engagement at venues like The Smith Opera House in Geneva, NY, and Shelter Studios in NYC. His endeavors reflect a belief that music is best enjoyed when intertwined with other cultural experiences.

At the heart of Ellis’s work are the connections he nurtures with fellow artists and students. Whether collaborating with violinist Miguel Calleja as part of the Lejano Duo or working with composer Chris Cresswell on new pieces, his projects showcase the versatility of the classical guitar and his boundless creativity. As a freelance musician, he has performed with the Syracuse Orchestra, Syracuse Opera, and the 315 Ensemble.

In addition to his performance career, Ellis serves as a guitar instructor at Onondaga Community College and runs a teaching studio at the Westcott Music Collective. His passion for music education is evident in his role as President of the Great Lakes Guitar Society, a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing music education and performance opportunities throughout the Syracuse community.

Ellis holds a master’s degree from Syracuse University and a bachelor’s degree from SUNY Fredonia. He resides in Syracuse, where he continues to inspire both budding musicians and seasoned performers alike.

Upcoming Performance: Ben Ellis will be performing at the Hornell Public Library on Friday, October 11, 2024. This free event begins at 6:30 PM and will include refreshments, offering a wonderful opportunity for the community to experience his exceptional artistry.
