The Hornell Red Raiders girls’ basketball team fell just short of winning a state championship last season. While they have a lot of players back, even winning a sectional title is not a given — much less a state title.
To be prepared, the team has played some of the top teams in the state, and beyond, in anticipation of another deep March Madness run. Despite the tough schedule, players have reached 1,000-point marks and more.
Jordyn Dyring not only broke the girls’ scoring record this season, but also broke the boys’ mark to become the all-time leader scorer in Hornell basketball history.
Coach Jim Dagon said, “It was also a special night for Jordyn Dyring, who reached another incredible career milestone by surpassing the Hornell boys’ and girls’ all-time scoring record. Her consistency, work ethic, and commitment to her game continue to set the standard.”
As for the schedule, he said, “We love challenging ourselves against the best competition possible, and this (a loss to Susquehanna Valley) was one of those games. Win or lose, experiences like this are valuable, and there is a lot we can take from tonight that will help us continue to improve.”
Here are some recent game reports:
Hornell 57, East High 42
Coach Dagon said, “Our defense set the tone tonight. We did a great job pressuring the ball, getting into our rotations, and playing connected on that end of the floor. It was five players working together at all times, communicating, helping each other, and committing to the details defensively, and that effort allowed us to control the game.

Offensively, our scoring was very balanced, which was great to see. We shared the ball well and played unselfish basketball, and a lot of different players stepped up and contributed.”
Jordyn Dyring led us with a game-high 18 points. Raegan Evingham added 11, Selena Maldonado finished with 8, and we got six points apiece from Mia Nasca, A’Jonay Hawkins, and Alexis Smith. Teegan Eveland chipped in with 2.
“Overall, this was a strong team win,” Dagon said. “Our defensive intensity, ball movement, and togetherness were the difference, and it was encouraging to see us play the game the right way for 32 minutes.”
Susquehanna Valley 64, Hornell 50
Coach Dagon said, “I was proud of how our girls competed tonight. We fought hard until the final buzzer against a very good Susquehanna Valley team that put together 32 strong minutes of basketball, and they deserve a lot of credit for that. We stuck to our game plan and generated quality, open looks, but the shots just didn’t fall the way they normally do. When two good teams play each other, it’s difficult to come away with a win if everything isn’t clicking, and that was the case tonight.”
Offensively, Raegan Evingham led us with 26 points. Jordyn Dyring added 11, Selena Maldonado finished with 8, and Mia Nasca chipped in 5
Hornell 72, Livonia 39
Coach Dagon said, “I was extremely proud of our group tonight. The girls played with great intensity, toughness, and togetherness, and their effort and attention to detail really stood out. From start to finish, we set the tone with our energy and played the right way.”
Offensively, Jordyn Dyring led the way with a game-high 24 points. Selena Maldonado added 14, Raegan Evingham finished with 12, and Teegan Eveland chipped in 10. We also got contributions from Alexis Smith with 5 points, Mia Nasca with 3, A’Jonay Hawkins with 2, and Mayleigh Martin with 2.
“We’re finally getting healthy, and you can see the difference in our focus and connectivity,” Dagon said. “The girls are really locking in, and our execution and attention to detail allowed us to put together 32 very solid minutes tonight. It was a complete team effort and a good step forward for us.”
