A wave of Alfred State students took turns reciting poems at the biennial Poetry Reading event hosted by the English and Humanities Department

A large crowd of students, faculty, and staff an evening of poetry, art, and music at the biennial Poetry Reading event hosted by the Alfred State English and Humanities Department.

ASC President Steven Mauro and Vice President for Academic Affairs Carrie Cokely opened the evening with poems before Travis Matteson, Chair of the English and Humanities Department asked the audience to share their original poems or the personal favorites.

For nearly an hour students shared poetry prior to a quartet featuring English and Humanities adjunct instructor JD Struckmann, Director of Libraries Janelle Varin, Instructional Technologies senior staff assistant William Schultze, and student Vinny Ricotta closing out the evening with a musical blues tribute that included student created lyrics.

“It was a great evening of poetry, art, and music,” commented Matteson. “I am always impressed with the courage and confidence our students display to stand in front of the room and share their personal work. It is an inspiring day, and I look forward to reading more original works in the upcoming editions of Ergo.”

The evening featured desserts baked by the Culinary Arts students, artwork drawn by Alfred Students, and guitar music by Dr. Tim Bocchi.

Many of the original poems recited by students have been submitted for inclusion in Ergo, the literary and artistic publication of Alfred State that is published each semester.
